WENATCHEE — The group Our Valley, Our Future has received a $15,000 grant from the Alcoa Foundation to help boost participation and funding from local businesses in Our Valley’s community initiative.
“It’s critical to have business involvement and business leadership” as part the organization’s efforts, said Alan Walker, executive director for United Way of Chelan and Douglas Counties, the fiscal sponsor of Our Valley. To date, most of the group’s funding has come from public and nonprofit sectors.
The Alcoa Foundation funds have been earmarked for “capacity building” — in this case, increasing involvement of local businesses — in Our Valley’s push to develop its organizational structure, guide 150 community development projects, encourage public engagement, present success stories to residents and create a system to measure the group’s progress.
“The private sector has a lot of potential benefit to accrue from Our Valley’s efforts,” said Walker, “including a more diversified economy, more good paying jobs and a better quality of life for the entire valley — all of which helps local business.”
