Home sales rise as prices, interest rates fall
WENATCHEE — Area home sales increased through summer, benefiting from lower interest rates, lower prices and slightly looser credit. “There’s a general sense that the market has turned around, that things are better,” said Perrin Cornell, broker for Century 21 in Wenatchee. “Prices are down, optimism is up, and homes are selling.”
U.S. new-home sales rise to match 2-year high
WASHINGTON — Sales of new homes in the United States rose 3.6 percent in July to match a two-year high reached in May, the latest sign of a steady recovery in the housing market. The Commerce Department said today that new-home sales reached a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 372,000. That’s the same as in May, which was the highest since April 2010. In the past 12 months, sales have jumped 25 percent. Still, the increase is from a historically low level. New-home sales remain well below the annual pace of 700,000 that economists consider healthy.
Mortgage numbers showing slow improvement
LOS ANGELES — U.S. homeowners are doing better with their mortgage payments, driving the percentage of borrowers who have fallen behind to a three-year low, a new report says. Still, the rate of improvement remains slow, credit reporting agency TransUnion said today. But the percentage of mortgages going unpaid is unlikely to return anytime soon to where it was before the housing market crashed.
