Naked Chicken Chalupa
Taco Bell's new Naked Chicken Chalupa has diners clucking.

A month after Taco Bell unveiled its Naked Chicken Chalupa, we realized it was crunch time — make that crunch and munch time — so we tried one of these new concoctions for lunch last Tuesday.

And we liked it. A lot.

The twist in this new fast-food creation is that the tortilla shell is made of — not corn, not flour — but chicken. Say what? Yep … Taco Bell has taken a chicken breast (and possibly other pieces), pounded it into a disc, and then breaded, fried and shaped it into a v-shaped receptacle for chalupa fixings.

In this case, the fixings include Taco Bell’s standard chopped iceberg lettuce, diced tomato and shredded cheddar cheese. They also include one magic ingredient: a cool-on-the-tongue avocado ranch sauce that perfectly complements the chicken shell.

About that “tortilla”: Somehow the whizzes in Taco Bell’s research-and-development kitchen found just the right balance of crunchiness and spiciness to make this new use of fried chicken a really good idea.

The price of $2.99 seems about right, too. But a real bargain is the Naked Chicken Chalupa box which contains the chicken chalupa, two additional tacos and drink for only $5.

OK, we admit that it's not terribly healthy. But it's pretty darned yummy.
